Contemporary Ceramics : From Vessels to Conceptual Art |
|
|
Many Approaches of Contemporary
Ceramic Artists
The first ceramics were vessels, but contemporary
ceramics have developed far beyond the concept of
vessels and now show a tremendous diversity. In
the late twentieth century, American ceramists applied
the new ideas in contemporary fine art to ceramics
and introduced ceramic sculpture. They brought about
a fundamental change in works of ceramic art. The
new concept in ceramics that originated in America
spread worldwide, and most contemporary ceramic
artists today are producing works as expression
in clay.
This exhibition showcases works of ceramic artists
from forty countries. Since the late twentieth century,
these artists have sought the unlimited potential
of clay as material for artworks as expression.
Visitors can see the unlimited potential of clay
as material of expression, the wide variety of new
techniques employed in contemporary ceramics, and
the many very different attempts by artists to produce
purely expressive works of fine art.

Contemporary ceramic artists are experimenting
and producing pieces in diverse forms, taking
many different approaches to their work. Ceramics
as expression are the mainstream of ceramic art
today. As a medium with which to pursue pure art,
clay has unlimited potential for expression. It
allows artists to expand the arena of art. There
can be no denying that contemporary ceramics are
now a unique genre of fine art. The pieces on
display here are from the collection of the World
Ceramic Exposition Foundation, and they are all
works by world renowned artists who have had tremendous
influence on ceramics and pioneered a new field
of aesthetics. |
