The 1st World Ceramic Biennale 2001 Korea International
Competition was held as a main event of the World
Ceramic Exposition 2001 Korea. It was a great success.
Even though it was the inaugural event, the International
Competition attracted 2,019 highly talented artists
from 69
countries, showing its potential to become an established
international ceramic festival.
Participants were invited to submit entries for
two categories: "Ceramics for Use" and
"Ceramics as Expression." The selection
of winning pieces occurred in two stages, the preliminary
slide selection and the final selection based on
the examination of the actual works.
There was one Grand Prize, two Gold Prizes, eight
Bronze Prizes, 16 Special Prizes, and five
Juror's Choices.
The Grand Prize winner was awarded 30 million won
plus a scholarship worth 10 million won.
Out of 4,206 entries submitted, 305 works (170 'Ceramic
as Expression' pieces and 135 'Ceramics for Use'
pieces) passed the preliminary selection and entered
into the final selection for the decisions on the
winning entries.
However, out of these 305 entries, eight artists
failed to submit their actual artworks for the final
selection.
Excluding these eight entries, a total of 297 artworks
(165 ceramic as expression and 132 ceramics for
use) were exhibited at the Icheon World Ceramic
Center during the Exposition from Aug. 10 to Oct.
28, 2001.
The Grand Prize went to a ceramics as expression
piece titled "Healing Being"by Lawson
Oyekan from Nigeria, Gold Prize went to Lee Yong-Phil(Korea)
in the category for use and Ken Eastman(UK) in the
category of ceramics as expression. The Silver Prizes
in the ceramics for use category went to Kim Sang-Ki(Korea)
and Masatoshi Sakaegi(Japan) and the Silver in the
ceramics as expression went to Philippe Barde(Switzerland)
and Torbjrn Kvasbo(Norway). The Bronze prizes in
the ceramics for use category went to Karin Bablok
(Germany), Franois Ruegg(Switzeralnd), Hwang Kap-Sun(Korea)
and Son Ho- Gyu(Korea). The Bronze prize in the
ceramics as expression category went to Kim Hyun-
Sook(Korea), Jun Nishida(Japan), Masamichi Yoshikawa(Japan)
and Yuh Sun-Koo(USA). The Special awards went to
eight entries in each category, while the Juror's
Choice awards went to five artists. Selected awards
went to the remaining 257 entries. The
