The 1st World Ceramic Biennale 2001 Korea International Competition was held as a main event of the World Ceramic Exposition 2001 Korea. It was a great success. Even though it was the inaugural event, the International Competition attracted 2,019 highly talented artists from 69
countries, showing its potential to become an established international ceramic festival.
Participants were invited to submit entries for two categories: "Ceramics for Use" and "Ceramics as Expression." The selection of winning pieces occurred in two stages, the preliminary slide selection and the final selection based on the examination of the actual works.
There was one Grand Prize, two Gold Prizes, eight Bronze Prizes, 16 Special Prizes, and five
Juror's Choices.
The Grand Prize winner was awarded 30 million won plus a scholarship worth 10 million won.
Out of 4,206 entries submitted, 305 works (170 'Ceramic as Expression' pieces and 135 'Ceramics for Use' pieces) passed the preliminary selection and entered into the final selection for the decisions on the winning entries.
However, out of these 305 entries, eight artists failed to submit their actual artworks for the final selection.
Excluding these eight entries, a total of 297 artworks (165 ceramic as expression and 132 ceramics for use) were exhibited at the Icheon World Ceramic Center during the Exposition from Aug. 10 to Oct. 28, 2001.
